Heat Pump Rebates Available for BC Residents in 2023

Receive rebates and grants of up to $13,500 for upgrading to a heat pump. Different types of renovation and heat pump rebates are available for residents of British Columbia. Meanwhile, it might be difficult to know the available grants and rebates.

BC Heat Pump Rebates are available from diverse sources, such as Fortis BC, BC Hydro, the federal government, municipalities and other government bodies. It is good to know those heat pump manufacturers also give rebates.

Reading this report further, you can qualify for large size of rebate for changing from fossil fuels to a more efficient and eco-friendly appliance like a heat pump. If you wish to switch to a heat pump, here are available rebates you can benefit from in British Columbia. Keep in mind that the following rebates can be combined for the maximum savings possible:

Available Rebates:

  • About $500 with Heat Pump Group Purchase Rebates
  • About $2000 in Municipal Top Ups
  • About $5000 from the Canada Greener Homes Grant
  • About $6000 for the installation of a Heat Pump
  • About 60% to 95% for CleanBC Income Qualified Rebate

    Below is the breakdown of the available heat pump rebates when you upgrade your home heating and cooling to a Mini, Multi Split or Central Heat Pump.

Heat Pump Rebates Available for BC Residents in 2023

The above-mentioned $6000 heat pump rebate applies to whoever resides in BC while the municipal top-ups are only available to some municipalities as shown in the chart below.

Keep in mind that the municipal top-ups may run out anytime. Every municipality has a pool of money and when it runs out, the top-up rebates also run out

Group Home Heating Rebates

Homeowners who desire to upgrade their heating and cooling in groups qualify for Group Purchase Rebates. The rebates are available for groups of two to four homes up to thirty homes. Each homeowner is entitled to $500 for the upgrade.

  • Federal Government Grants for Home Heating: Canada Greener Homes Grant

    When a ground source heat pump is added, there are up to $5,000 grants, or when a ground source heat pump is replaced, up to $3,000 grants are available. When an air source heat pump is added, there are up to $4,000 grants, or when a cold climate heat pump is added, up to $5,000 grants are available. When a domestic water heater is replaced with an Energy Star-certified model, there are up to $1,000 grants. Meanwhile, the heat pump installation must be carried out by a licensed professional, who must be on a list of eligible products, on the home retrofit page o the official Government of Canada.

    For clarification, there are two examples below indicating how much of a rebate can be expected. Keep in mind that municipal top-ups are a limited-time offer. Recall that municipal funding is limited by availability and only offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Consequently, they are not guaranteed.
  • Example 1: BC Heat Pump Rebate for Duncan Resident

    When a Duncan resident installs a new heat pump, switches from fossil fuel (propane, natural gas or oil) and maximizes the Heat Pump Group Purchase rebate and the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

    Maximum Rebates Available: $11,850

    (About $6,000 for installing new heat pump, plus about $500 group purchase rebate, plus $350 municipal top-up and $5,000 greener homes grant) = $11,850
  • Example 2: Heat Pump Rebate for Victoria BC Resident

    When a Victoria resident installs a new heat pump, switches from fossil fuel (propane, natural gas or oil) and maximizes the Heat Pump Group Purchase rebate

    Maximum Rebates Available: $13,500

    (About $6,000 for installing new heat pump, plus about $500 group purchase rebate, plus $2,000 municipal top-up and $5,000 greener homes grant) = $13,500

    Besides, the Income Qualified Program is also available. It is based on the total income of all adults in the building including the number of people residing in the home. This program may cover up to 95% costs of upgrading, depending on qualifications.
